Part 5 – Publishing of the WOW Slider.

When you are ready to publish your slider online or to a local drive for testing you should go to “Gallery/Publish“. Select the publishing method: publish to folder, publish to FTP server or paste jquery image slider into existing html page using insert to page option.

publish to folder. To select a local location on your hard drive, just click the Browse folders button and choose a location. Then click Ok. You can also set “Open web page after publishing” option.

publish to FTP server. The FTP Location Manager window enables you to define a number of connections for use when uploading your image slider to an FTP.

You are able to add a new FTP site by clicking “Edit” to the right of the “Publish to FTP server” drop down list. FTP Location Manager window will appear. Now type in a meaningful (this is not the actual hostname) name for your site and fill in the FTP details in the appropriate fields. You will have to type in your hostname, e.g. domain. The FTP port is normally located on port 21 thus this has been prefilled for you already. If your web site uses another port, you will have to enter it here.

Type in your username and password for the connection. If you do not fill in this information, WOW Slider is unable to connect to your site and thus not able to upload your photo slider to website. If this site enables anonymous connections, just type in anonymous as the username and your e-mail address as the password.

You might want to change the Directory as well if you need to have your uploaded images placed in e.g. “www/gallery/“. You can specify it in the FTP Folder field on the Publish window.

Notice: Write the name of the folder where your photo slider will be placed on the server. Notice that you should specify this field; otherwise your jquery slider will be uploaded into the root folder of your server!

insert to page. To select a html page, just click the Open HTML page button and choose page where you want to install web site album. Then click Open.

Click inside the page to select where you want you slider to appear. Click ‘Insert Before’ button and ‘Publish button’. Notice that it is not posible to insert more than one slider on the same page.

Notice: It’s impossible to insert more than one sliders into the same page!

Part 6 – Save your photo slider as project file.

When you exit WOW Slider, you’ll be asked if you want to save your project. The project consists of the pictures you choose to put on your image slider and all your settings. It’s a good idea to save the project, because that will allow you to change the project in case you decide to do something different with future sliders. So click Yes, then enter a name for your project. To select the location of your project, just click the Browse folders button and choose a different location. Then click Save.

Part 7 – Add WOW Slider inside your own page.

WOW Slider generates a special code. You can paste it in any place on your page where you want to add image slider.

* Export your photo slider using WOW Slider in any test folder on a local drive.
* Open the generated index.html file in any text editor.
* Copy all code for WOW Slider from the HEAD and BODY tags and paste it on your page in the HEAD tag and in the place where you want to have a jquery slider (inside the BODY tag).

<head>
…
<!– Start WOWSlider.com HEAD section –>
…..
<!– End WOWSlider.com HEAD section –>
… </head>
<body>
…
<!– Start WOWSlider.com BODY section –>
…..
<!– End WOWSlider.com BODY section –>
…</body>

* You can easily change the style of the templates. Find the generated ‘engine/style.css’ file and open it in any text editor.

Integrating WordPress with Your Website

Introduction

By nature, WordPress is very powerful. It can be as complex or as simple as you wish. With that in mind, how much you want to use WordPress with your existing website is totally up to you. There may be only a few features of WordPress you want to use when integrating it with your site, or you may want your entire site run with WordPress. This tutorial will guide you through making your WordPress site look like your current design. We will start with how to make a WordPress blog look like the rest of your site. Then we can move on to making your entire site running on WordPress.

Begin the transformation

First, assume you have an existing site at http://myexample.com. Next, create a new sub-directory (folder) at your site and call it ‘blog’ (you could use something other than blog, but you must create this sub-directory). So you now have an empty sub-directory at http://myexample.com/blog/. Now, download WordPress and upload all of its files into this new folder, and install Wordpress.

Grab the header

In order to transform regular PHP pages into ones that utilize WordPress, you need to add either of the following code snippets to the start of each page.

<?php
/* Short and sweet */
define('WP_USE_THEMES', false);
require('./wp-blog-header.php');
?>

<?php
require('/the/path/to/your/wp-blog-header.php');
?>

The Loop

It is necessary to include The Loop in your pages to effectively take advantage of the multitude of Template Tags or plugins available. Familiarize yourself with The Loop and the basics of The Loop in Action to get underway with integrating the power of WordPress into your website.

Examples

Generate a list

In the event you want to show ten posts sorted alphabetically in ascending order on your web page, you could do the following to grab the posted date, title and excerpt:

<?php
require('/the/path/to/your/wp-blog-header.php');
?>

<?php
$posts = get_posts('numberposts=10&order=ASC&orderby=post_title');
foreach ($posts as $post) : start_wp(); ?>
<?php the_date(); echo "<br />"; ?>
<?php the_title(); ?>
<?php the_excerpt(); ?>
<?php
endforeach;
?>

Last three posts

Display the last three posts on your web page.

// Get the last 3 posts.
<?php
require('/the/path/to/your/wp-blog-header.php');
?>

<?php query_posts('showposts=3'); ?>
<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>
<a href="<?php the_permalink() ?>" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to <?php the_title(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a><br />
<?php endwhile;?>

Making a theme

The first portion of this tutorial described how to take components of WordPress and integrate them into your existing site. You may wish to stop right now, but perhaps you would like to create a WordPress theme that would eventually replace web pages on your site.

You will need to create a custom theme. A theme is a set of files used to tell WordPress how to display the site. Using_Themes. Go to your WordPress Themes folder (located at /wp-content/themes/) and create a new folder, call it “mytheme”. This is where you will be adding files to control your site’s look. You may wish to acquaint yourself with Theme_Development at this time. The basic theme files are index.php, style.css, single.php, and comments.php.

A little known, but very helpful HTML element, <base> is going to help you out a lot. It instructs the browser to use a specified URL for relative paths:

<base href="http://myexample.com" />

Normally, the <base> would be your current URL. For example, the default <base> at your blog will be http://myexample.com/blog/. By changing it with the <base> element, you tell the browser to look for files at http://myexample.com/. Why is this useful? When copying and pasting HTML from your current site, you will have references to something like:

<img src="me.jpg" alt="" />

When you copy this HTML to your theme, the browser will be looking for http://myexample.com/blogs/me.jpg, when the file actually exists at http://myexample.com/me.jpg. Using <base href="http://myexample.com" />, the browser is told the right place to find the files and you do not have to edit every reference to every file that you copied from your main site.

We are getting a few emails with people asking if they should learn HTML 5 so today we will try and clear a few things up. As you know HTML 5 is going to be the next installment in Hyper Text Markup Language, this is quite a leap forward in terms of what has changed in the last five or so years, currently HTML 4.01 is the standard HTML being used and it wasn’t all that much of a change since upgrading from the previous HTML 2.0.

HTML 5 is going to be he next biggest thing since sliced bread(pardon my lame phrase it’s getting late) the new standard of code is going to allow for website developers, web masters and newcomers to create rich feature packed websites, not only websites in general HTML 5 can even be used to make desktop applications, online applications.

If your even slightly interested in making websites or applications then you really should learn HTML 5, the code itself is not all that different from the current code, all tho as this is a huge update to Hyper Text Markup Language there are plenty of new features and a whole lot of extra coding, it may sound a little scary at the moment as there are not many sites actually using HTML 5 this will start to change in the coming months. The reason not many sites are using HTML 5 already is due to the fact that only 2 out of about 20 different browsers can understand the new HTML 5 markup, In the coming weeks we will be making a HTML 5 website so that you can see just what it is capable of (you will need to download the Safari browser in order to view our HTML 5 examples).

We will be adding HTML 5 tutorials every few days so please come back shortly and you can learn HTML 5 with us.

The CSS3 text-shadow property has been around for some time now and is commonly used to recreate Photoshop’s Drop Shadow type shading to add subtle shadows which help add depth, dimension and to lift an element from the page. This isn’t all the text-shadow property is capable of though, by getting creative and playing around with the colours, offset and blurring we can create some clever and pretty cool text effects!

Check out the six text effects of vintage/retro, inset, anaglyphic, fire and board game in the demo, then copy the code snippets below to use the effects in your own designs. Needless to say you’ll need a text-shadow supporting browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) to see them in all their glory.

View the demo

How text-shadow works

The text shadow CSS property is used to add shading to any text related HTML element. The syntax includes figures for the X-offset, the Y-offset, the blur amount and finally the colour of the actual shadow. What’s more, you don’t have to settle with one shadow, you can build up multiple text-shadow values to create some really cool effects!

Vintage / Retro text effect

text-shadow: 5px 5px 0px #eee, 7px 7px 0px #707070;

How it works:

The vintage style text effect is made up of two text shadows, but the first is set to the same colour as the background in order to give the impression that the second shadow (the thin dark grey one) is offset to the bottom right. Remember to make sure your first shadow colour is set to the same colour as your page background, and the text and second shadow also both use the same colour.

Neon text effect

text-shadow: 0 0 10px #fff, 0 0 20px #fff, 0 0 30px #fff, 0 0 40px #ff00de, 0 0 70px #ff00de, 0 0 80px #ff00de, 0 0 100px #ff00de, 0 0 150px #ff00de;

How it works:

The neon text effect is made up of 8 levels of shading. The base text is given a white fill, then each of the 8 text-shadow values are given larger and larger blur amounts while also getting darker. This blends between a vivid white inner glow and the large purple outer aura.

Inset text effect

text-shadow: 0px 2px 3px #666;

How it works:

The inset or letterpress style text effect is one of the more common uses of text-shadow. The shadow is offset on the Y-axis by a tiny amount to give the impression of a subtle highlight. On dark backgrounds offset the shadow underneath the text with a light colour, whereas on light backgrounds offset to the top of the text with a darker shadow colour.

Anaglyphic text effect

text-shadow: 8px 8px 0 rgba(255,0,180,0.5);

How it works:

The anaglyphic text effect recreates the cool effect used on old 3D images. The effect is recreated with CSS using a mix of text-shadow and RGBa colouring. Using RGBa on the text and the shadow allows the alpha channel to be set to 50% transparency so the underlying text is visible through the shadow.

Fire text effect

text-shadow: 0 0 20px #fefcc9, 10px -10px 30px #feec85, -20px -20px 40px #ffae34, 20px -40px 50px #ec760c, -20px -60px 60px #cd4606, 0 -80px 70px #973716, 10px -90px 80px #451b0e;

How it works:

The fire text effect is another style that uses multiple levels of shading. Each shadow is offset in different directions, uses various blur settings and blends a range of warm colours to create the impression of a flame. These colours span from bright whites through to yellows, oranges and darker amber tones.

Board Game text effect

text-shadow: 10px 10px 0 #ffd217, 20px 20px 0 #5ac7ff, 30px 30px 0 #ffd217, 40px 40px 0 #5ac7ff;

How it works:

The board game text effect simply uses multiple shadows each with an increasing amount of offset from the original text to create an alternating series of colours. No blurring is used to keep the shadows crisp and sharp as exact reproductions of the original text.
